Royal Opera House

The Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) is a prominent venue for musical arts and culture in Oman, located in the Shati Al-Qurm district of Muscat on Sultan Qaboos Street. The opera house was built on the orders of Sultan Qaboos of Oman and features unique contemporary Omani architecture. It has a maximum capacity of 1,100 people and includes a concert theatre, auditorium, formal landscaped gardens, cultural market with retail, luxury restaurants, and an art centre for musical, theatrical, and operatic productions.

Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, the ruler of Oman during the construction of the opera house, was a fan of classical music and arts. In 2001, he ordered the building of an opera house, initially called the “House of Musical Arts,” but later named the “Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM).” Carillion Alawi built the opera house, which became the first in the world equipped with Radio Marconi’s multimedia interactive display seatback system, Mode23. It officially opened on October 12, 2011, with a production of the opera Turandot, conducted by Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo.

The opera house has hosted performances by renowned artists, such as Plácido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli, Renée Fleming, Yo Yo Ma, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the American Ballet Theatre, the Mariinsky Ballet, Paul Taylor Dance Company, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis with New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and Arab artists like Majida El Roumi and a tribute to legendary Arab singer Um Kalthoum. In March 2013, Indian violin icon L. Subramaniam performed at the opera house and praised it as the only orchestra in the Middle East composed entirely of musicians from the region.

Royal Opera House Muscat is the leading arts and culture organization in the Sultanate of Oman, located in Muscat. The vision of the Opera House is to serve as a centre of excellence in global cultural engagement, enriching lives through diverse artistic, cultural, and educational programs. The multidisciplinary work of Royal Opera House Muscat showcases rich and diverse artistic creations from Oman, the region, and the world, providing a space for culture and socioeconomic development reflections and actions. It inspires audiences and nurtures creativity with innovative programs, fosters cultural vitality and unleashes talent, promotes cultural tourism, and puts cultural diplomacy into practice by reinvigorating global and multi-disciplinary collaborations and exchanges.

The leadership of the Royal Opera House Muscat is guided by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al-Said, following the vision of His Majesty the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said. The Higher Committee, spearheaded by His Highness Sayyid Fahad bin Mahmoud Al-Said, Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers, has followed the progress of this initiative since its inception. The Higher Committee shapes the vision of the organization and considers the policies, strategies, and guidelines recommended by the Board of Directors.
