The pools of Wadi Shab and Wadi Tiwi – yes, the water is actually this green and turquoise!
Swim in the glistening turquoise pools of Wadi Shab. Having a dip in the waters of this oasis is essential for each traveler. Since I was journeying alone as a female and had no intention of hiring a car, I paid for a personal guide for the day to go on the journey. After a two-hour drive out of Muscat, we walked through the canyon for 45 minutes before arriving at a few pools. Leaving our stuff on the shore, we started swimming. Make sure to wear shoes because the pools change from deep to shallow and occasionally you have to get out and step/clamber over rocks and paths before the next pool.
At the finality, a minute gap in the stone wall can be dived through to gain a concealed cascade. It’s marvelous! Clothes-wise, typical trek clothing, and (decent enough) togs are absolutely ok. I had on tights, a loose shirt, and a swimming costume, and saw else any solo women so attired.
Be amazed at the beauty of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque.
During my Middle East journey, I visited two mosques: the Sheikh Zayed in Abu Dhabi and the Sultan Qaboos in Muscat. The variation between the two was huge. The Sheikh Zayed was impressive but busy and full of tourists, although I arrived 30 minutes before opening. In contrast, when I arrived at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat at the opening, I was the sole visitor. I was the only one there for some time before others arrived. A strict dress code is enforced when entering the mosque – covering wrists, ankles, and hair. Get a long tunic and scarf to ensure you’re properly covered. I had a local photographer take my photos inside.
Go to sea to spot dolphins in the Persian Gulf.
There are lots of dolphins in the Gulf of Oman, and starting early you should be able to find some. I found a tour online and spent a morning enjoying Muscat’s sun, sea, and shores.
Go to the Muttrah Souk.
In one of the oldest and biggest Arab markets, at the Muttrah Souk, you can buy gold. Open until late, I got a taxi to there and browsed the booths for a few hours.
The stunning architecture of The Chedi Muscat
Relax at The Chedi Muscat Hotel. Situated right beside the beach, The Chedi Muscat is one of the most exquisite properties ever I’ve been to. Just strolling through the grounds was a unique experience, and with multiple swimming pools to lie by, it is an idyllic area to be calm on a hot day. The glorious grounds of The Chedi Muscat. One of my regular outfits in Oman was a cool linen shirt with buttons and flowy linen trousers.
Wondering what to wear in Oman?
As a solo female traveler in the UAE and Oman, I was intimidated when packing. I found dress standards were conservative, yet not hard to follow (like how I normally dress at home). The gist: cover shoulders, knees, and chest. Wear loose, airy styles (tight jeans are too hot during most of the year). E.g.: a loose tee and billowy cropped trousers.
I wore a one-piece costume at Wadi Shab, which my guide suggested, and everyone was similarly dressed. and hiking clothes all the time. I suggest adding a few light scarves and making sure you have an outfit to the wrists/ankles if you want to enter a mosque. My time in Oman was wonderful and I reckon the area is set to become increasingly sought-after shortly. I was only there for four days but you could explore the country and desert by car for more than a week. Is Oman on your travel list yet?
