Rub Al Khali Desert Day Trip from Salalah
This day trip takes you deep into one of the most remote and striking landscapes in the world: the Rub Al Khali, or Empty Quarter. Made famous by British explorer Wilfred Thesiger in his book “Arabian Sands”, the desert is a vast sea of dunes stretching across southern Arabia. Thesiger travelled here with Bedouin guides and described the experience as both humbling and unforgettable.
Your tour starts at 8:30 AM from your hotel in Salalah the drive takes you through the Al Qara Mountains and makes a short stop in Thumrait, a small town with Bedouin routes. From there, you’ll head West across open desert terrain into alleged. One of the key stops is the site of Ubar, often referred to as the Lost City, where ruins were uncovered in 1992.
From here, the landscape opens up into the Rub Al Khali, a seemingly endless expanse of sand that reaches far into the horizon. The dunes here, especially in the Al Hasman (Fasat) area, are some of the tallest in Oman, reaching over 200 meters. The colors of the sand shift with the light and the silence out here is unlike anything you’ll experience elsewhere. It’s a place where time slows down and the night sky if you’re staying overnight, becomes a canopy of stars.
On the return trip to Salalah you will pass Wadi Dawkah, home to frankincense trees and part of Oman’s UNESCO World Heritage. It’s a quiet but powerful reminder of the region’s deep connection to the ancient trade routes.
